Nine-Year Partnership with Aramark is a Corporate Responsibility Model

The deep partnership the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities and our member network have had the honor of taking part in for nine years alongside Aramark, a global leader in the service industry, goes beyond an ordinary intermediary relationship. I think it’s extraordinary.

We enjoy a working partnership that not only involves many of our member organizations in a variety of ways, but most importantly touches the lives of a large number of the people they impact each day. The company’s global volunteer and philanthropic program, Aramark Building Community, assists our member organizations to support and inspire families to lead healthier lifestyles and empower people of all ages to succeed in work. The Aramark Building Community Academy offers a wealth of free resources that help enhance the operational and program excellence of community centers in the area of health and wellness. Members around the country have enjoyed the benefits of countless hours and a wealth of talent from Aramark employees volunteering their time to community projects.

The past six years, our partnership with Aramark has included the Peter B. Goldberg Aramark Building Community Executive Leadership Award. Considering the level of accomplishment in this network, the leadership qualities needed to win the award are significant. It takes an independent committee comprised of member organization CEOs, funders, and corporate partners to select the winner.

For 2016, our winner is Nancy Biberman, founder and president of Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco) in Bronx, New York. Nancy recognized a long time ago that access to safe and affordable housing isn’t enough to help people reach their full potential. They must also have access to real educational, economic, and employment opportunities.

So Nancy and WHEDco not only developed three affordable housing complexes that are home to more than 550 families in the South Bronx, but this impressive team also ensured they incorporate a health clinic, business development services, and a Head Start Center.

Our friend Bev Dribin, vice president of public affairs for Aramark, was on point when she said, “Nancy’s fierce determination to establish desperately-needed affordable living spaces and social services in the South Bronx has resulted in more stable and successful families.”

I encourage you to learn more about Nancy and also to view highlights of the inspirational acceptance speech by Nancy’s colleague at our national conference.

Aramark truly lives its mission to enrich and nourish lives, and does so in a variety of creative ways. We are grateful to be one of their nonprofit partners, but I am sure Aramark would agree that the best aspects of our years of partnership are the many people who are healthier and who have learned job skills that assisted them in reaching their fullest potential.
