Using the New Poverty Data Webinar
Facts and data are persuasive. This webinar is an opportunity to learn how to use the forthcoming census data to make the case for your programs.
Tuesday, September 10 from 1-2:30 p.m. CT
Register for this important training session, co-sponsored by Coalition on Human Needs, the Community Action Partnership, and the Children's Leadership Council.
The Census Bureau will release annual survey data about poverty, income, health insurance, housing, employment, and much more Sept. 17 and 19. At the same time, Congress will be grappling with a set of urgent deadlines and deciding whether to cut or protect human needs programs. You can use the new information to show the extent of need in your state or community, and why Congress should invest, not cut. This webinar will show you how.
Jared Bernstein: What to Expect from the New Data. Jared is a nationally known economist, now a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, author of the popular blog, On the Economy, and former chief economist and economic adviser to Vice President Joe Biden. Bernstein is regularly on CNBC, MSNBC, and many other media outlets. He'll assess whether poverty is likely to increase or decrease, and for whom. In the third year after the recession, was family income up or down? Are more people getting health insurance, or going without? We won't know for sure until Sept. 17, but Bernstein's guesswork is more than just educated—it's valedictorian.
Deborah Weinstein: Using the New Data. Debbie, executive director of the Coalition on Human Needs, will guide you through quick and easy routes to the information you need. Learn how to find fast answers to questions like: how many children are poor in my state or locality? How many families spend more than a third of their income on rent? How many are lifted out of poverty by tax credits, unemployment benefits, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program? How many have not finished high school? Who has health insurance? This training will help you get timely answers, to show what's at stake as Congress lurches toward more deadline-driven decisions.
Ellen Teller: Moderator. If you've viewed some of the Coalition on Human Needs' previous webinars, you know that Ellen, director of government relations for the Food Research and Action Center, is a masterful context-setter and handler of questions.
This webinar is 90 minutes, and it will have plenty of time for your questions.
