There many different approaches to voter engagement—the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities would like to hear and share yours. Go to the Alliance Policy Action Center to share your story.

Alliance member Rockford Housing Authority/Bridge Rockford Alliance (RHA) in Rockford, Illinois, has hosted candidate forums and meet and greets so that residents of the public housing authority and neighbors around their developments can meet candidates and register to vote. Candidates over the multisite tour included new candidates and incumbents for county, state, and 16th and 17th Congressional District seats.

RHA was a previous participant in the national AllianceVotes initiative, intended to harness the collective power of nonprofits and human-serving community-based organizations nationwide to help increase voter participation and raise the voices of all citizens in 2016. In Illinois, residents may register to vote online, in person and even day of the election at the polling locations. This effort is supported by the RHA CEO, resident services department, Board of Commissioners, and board chair.

As we will for other Alliance member organizations active in voter engagement and education, the Alliance will follow RHA’s progress and share results and lessons learned after the midterm elections. We will also promote all participating organizations using the #AllianceVotes hashtag.

By mobilizing our communities to vote, we engage the voices of those we serve and activate a group of voters that has historically supported policies that bolster people and communities, strengthen family well-being, and promote respect and dignity for all.
