As a membership organization that has a long history of working in partnership with government at the federal, state, and local levels to support individuals in reaching their full potential, the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities strategic action network stands in opposition to S.1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
The Alliance does not believe that S.1 supports our vision of a healthy and equitable society. The tax code should be designed to reflect our values as a nation, not jeopardize our future by adding trillions to the federal deficit. We believe that the Senate Tax Cuts and Jobs Act acts as a trigger for future Congressional decisions that will take a wrecking ball to foundational government programs that enable children to access quality education and health care, parents to work, families to feel safe and secure, and communities to thrive.
In addition, proposed changes to the tax code are estimated to decrease the number of people who use the charitable deduction incentive to donate to nonprofit organizations. Private donations provide nonprofit organizations flexible resources to innovate, improve services, and extend their reach. Modifications made to the tax code and decisions to how this bill is financed will have a significant impact on the future of our country. We call on senators to oppose S.1. and return to regular order to ensure that efforts to reform the tax code and proposed pay-fors are supported by evidence and data and do not come at the expense of public programs that sustain and support our current and future taxpayers.
