UCAN Achieves Lofty Supplier Diversity Goals in New Campus Project

As economic engines in their communities, human services nonprofits have considerable purchasing power that can be used to advance equity by hiring from community and contracting with minority- and women-owned companies. Recognizing this opportunity in its project to build a new campus, Alliance for Strong Families and Communities member UCAN in Chicago prioritized supplier diversity.

According to an article in Crain’s Chicago Business, 60 percent of project spending was with minority- and women-owned businesses including engineering an architecture firms. This well exceeds Chicago’s requirement for 24 percent minority-owned and four percent women-owned involvement.

The project, which was completed on time and on budget, used Gilbane Building Company as general contractor, and Joan Archie, executive director of construction compliance at the University of Chicago Medicine, aided in finding businesses for the job.
