The COO Roundtable is the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities' peer learning and networking event exclusively for chief operating officers and executive vice presidents at human-serving organizations.

The COO Roundtable will feature national thought leaders and discussions led by colleagues in the Alliance network who understand the unique challenges and opportunities of nonprofit organizations. Issues dealing with workforce, equity, and financial sustainability serve as cornerstones of the COO Roundtable.

Featured sessions at the 2017 COO Roundtable will include:

Making a Local Impact in Today's Political Climate
Marc Cherna, director of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, will share how the current political climate is affecting local nonprofit organizations and what Allegheny County is doing to promote integrated services. This session will also feature Samantha Balbier, executive director of the Greater Pittsburgh Nonprofit Partnership, who will discuss how her organization is mobilizing 350 nonprofits to work together to impact local and state policy.

Effective Decision-Making
Executives are tasked with making numerous decisions every day. Representatives from The Bridgespan Group will share how COOs can help their organizations make the right decisions quickly and without wasted effort.

Hiring, Promotion, and Training Leadership from the Populations We Serve
By approaching the concepts of advancing equity and talent development through stories and suggestions, this session feature a substantive conversation that contextualizes learning and identifies applicable takeaways.
This panel will share experiences and engage participants in dialogue around the following:

  • How do individuals hired from the community provide a special perspective and skills to the organization's overall mission and vision?
  • What challenges and benefits does hiring and promoting individuals from community present? Have you provided "differentiated" help such as training, coaching, or mentoring?
  • Do you feel that the goals of hiring from community is, in some way, in contention with the goal to hire the best staff and complete work effectively and efficiently? If you do, how do you balance those goals? If you do not, why that is so?
